Skin diseases caused by cosmetics I
1. IRRITATING CONTACT DERMATITIS
It is the most common skin condition that can result from the use of cosmetics. The most common symptoms are itching and a rash on the face.
The types of cosmetics that cause irritant contact
dermatitis include:
Cleansers: Facial cleansers that often contain
surfactants needed to properly cleanse the skin.
Toners and astringents: Toners and astringents may
contain alcohol or acids such as alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). Some patients may
experience skin problems due to these products.
Facials: Facials involve the use of manual manipulation and the application of chemicals to the skin, which often results in exfoliation of the upper surface of the skin. Mild irritation is unavoidable, but severe skin inflammation such as dermatitis can occur.
Overuse or misuse of any of these skin care products and procedures can cause skin irritation, especially in people with sensitive skin or other skin conditions.
What are the symptoms and signs of irritation?
Clinical picture
The patient may experience a burning or tingling sensation only after applying a cosmetic product to the skin. In severe cases, itching, redness, swelling, and then flaking and flaking of the skin may occur.
What should I do if I suspect I have makeup irritation?
Stop using all cosmetics on affected skin immediately. Consult your doctor. Do not seek help from beauticians or unskilled persons. Your doctor will prescribe you a mild face cleanser and a low-potency corticosteroid cream or ointment.
After the rash has healed, patches may be needed later to rule out allergies to cosmetics. (See below)
Your doctor will advise you on the appropriate cosmetics.
2. ALLERGIC CONTACT DERMATITIS.
Another serious skin condition caused by cosmetics is allergic contact dermatitis. Less common than irritant contact dermatitis. It is often difficult to distinguish allergic contact dermatitis from irritant contact dermatitis due to the appearance of a rash. Cosmetic ingredients that can cause skin allergies include fragrances, preservatives, and sunscreens.
What are the symptoms and signs of cosmetic allergy?
Clinical picture
Initially, the patient may not experience any problems with the cosmetic product. An allergic reaction can occur even after repeated exposure to a compromising substance.
Cosmetic allergy symptoms include itching, redness, swelling, or even blisters on the affected skin.
Secondary spread can occur outside the affected area. The same reaction will be repeated if the patient uses another product containing the same ingredients.
What should I do if I suspect I have a cosmetic allergy?
Care
Consult your doctor. You should immediately stop applying
all cosmetics to affected skin or elsewhere. Your doctor will prescribe topical
or, in severe cases, oral corticosteroids to reduce skin inflammation. Oral
antihistamines can relieve severe itching. After the rash disappears, a patch
should be applied to determine the cause of the allergy.
